PORTLAND, Maine — A summer night at a sold-out Fitzpatrick Stadium got off to a delayed start Saturday, as lightning in the Portland area pushed back kickoff between Portland Hearts of Pine and Corpus Christi FC. Once the teams were finally able to take the field, Corpus Christi struck early and held off the Hearts for a 2-0 win.
The sellout continued Portland’s remarkable run of packed houses at Fitzy, with the home crowd waiting out the weather and ready when play got underway. But it was the visitors who landed the first blow, finding an early goal that immediately changed the complexion of the match and forced Portland to chase.
“Goals change games,” Head Coach Bobby Murphy said. “You give up the goal early like we did, out of really nothing, it changes things. Then you’re pressing, you’re chasing. We had a good chance in the second half. I thought we did enough to get back in it, but it’s the way things are going right now for us.”
From there, the match settled into the kind of physical battle Portland expected from Corpus Christi. Challenges came hard, tempers occasionally flared and the referee went to his pocket multiple times as the two sides battled for control.
At the other end, goalkeeper Hunter Morse was called into action throughout the night and came up with several important saves to keep Portland within striking distance. His work gave the Hearts opportunities to get back into the match as they searched for an equalizer.
Portland had chances of its own, with Matteo Kidd twice finding himself in positions to change the game. Afterward, Kidd pointed to those moments as the difference on a frustrating night.
“I just think it was a dogfight from the beginning. I thought we were up for it. I think we’ve been up for it all week,” Kidd said. “I think it came down to moments again. I missed two big moments to change the game, and that’s on me. I should have scored a goal both times. It’s just a game of moments. You’ve got to win those moments and try to stack those on top and try to win games.”
The Hearts continued to push after halftime, looking for the goal that could bring the sold-out crowd back into the match. Portland created opportunities and forced Corpus Christi to defend, while Morse continued to make key stops at the other end to keep the deficit at one.
With Portland still searching for an equalizer late, Corpus Christi delivered the decisive blow in the 84th minute. Jack Keaney found the second goal for the visitors, doubling the advantage and leaving the Hearts with little time to respond. Portland continued to push through the final whistle, but Corpus Christi saw out the remaining minutes to secure the 2-0 result.
The loss leaves the Hearts searching for a response as the season moves into an increasingly important stretch. For Murphy, the path forward begins with getting back to the basics and making sure the group stays together.
“I think we’ve just got to simplify things,” Murphy said. “We’ve got to buckle down. We’ve got to do what’s asked and make sure that we’re all sticking together. There’s rough times, and you’ve just got to stick together through them and find a way. We’ll keep fighting to the end.”
That message was echoed by Mikey Lopez, who connected the challenge facing the Hearts with the resilience he has seen from Portland throughout his time with the club.
“Right now we’re getting punched as a team, so we’ve just got to collectively get up and keep pushing forward because that’s the only thing we can do,” Lopez said. “We’ve just got to keep moving forward and kind of reflect what this city and these people are and who they are. In my year and a half, I’ve noticed that this city’s not one to lay back down. When things get difficult, Portland’s a city that gets back up and starts fighting, and I know that’s what we’re going to do.”
The Hearts won’t have to wait long for another opportunity. Forward Madison FC comes to Portland next weekend as one of the hottest teams in USL League One, giving the Hearts a chance to respond in front of their home supporters.
“They’ve got to come to Fort Fitzy,” Kidd said. “Hopefully we can turn this into our house again and really hold it down. We’ve lost a couple in a row, and we’re trying to get back on track.”
For Portland, the message leaving Fitzy Saturday night was a simple one: keep moving forward.
