Assistant Coach

Alex Ryan brings a wealth of experience, regional knowledge and a proven track record of success to his role as assistant coach for Hearts of Pine.
Originally from Newcastle, England, Alex began his early soccer journey with the Sunderland Youth Academy before playing professionally in the fourth National League at Gateshead FC.
Alex earned a college scholarship to Campbellsville University in Kentucky, where he served as team captain. While at Campbellsville, he played a key role in the team winning a conference championship and was recognized with 1st Team All-Conference honors.
Alex’s connection to the United States soccer scene was further solidified during his time playing for the Premier Development League (PDL) with Seacoast United. It was here that he first established ties to the club, and transitioned from player into his first coaching position.
He served as the MLS Next Academy Director, and in 2016, Alex took on the role of Seacoast United’s NPSL Head Coach in USL League Two, where he achieved unparalleled success. Under his leadership, the team became the 2024 USL 2 National Champions and maintained an impressive all-time 82% winning percentage with an overall record of 53-9-6. Seacoast United also secured Northeast Division titles in 2022, 2023, and 2024, set a record points total for the division, and reached the playoffs four years in a row, culminating in an Eastern Conference title in 2024.
Alex’s coaching accomplishments extend beyond team success. He has helped develop over 40 professional players, including two top-5 MLS draft picks.
Reflecting on his new role, Alex shared, “It’s a really exciting time to be joining Portland Hearts of Pine , and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I look forward to adding to the great work the club has done thus far in bringing a successful soccer team that the city and community of Portland can be proud of.”
