KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Portland Hearts of Pine put together a resilient defensive performance Wednesday night, with goalkeeper Hunter Morse making seven saves as the Hearts earned a 1-1 road draw against One Knoxville SC at Covenant Health Park.
Portland came within minutes of taking all three points after Diego Gonzalez gave the Hearts the lead with a spectacular half-field goal, but Knoxville found an equalizer in the 86th minute to level the match.
Knoxville applied pressure throughout the night, finishing with 26 shots and controlling much of the possession, but Portland’s back line and Morse repeatedly turned the hosts away. The Hearts stayed organized under sustained pressure, keeping the match scoreless through the opening half and giving themselves the opportunity to strike first after the break.
That breakthrough came in spectacular fashion in the 57th minute.
Spotting Knoxville goalkeeper Johan Garibay well off his line, Gonzalez launched an ambitious effort from just inside the midfield line that sailed over Garibay and into the net to give Portland a 1-0 advantage.
The goal was Gonzalez’s second in the Hearts’ last three league matches and gave Portland a lead to protect against a Knoxville side that entered the night fourth in the USL League One standings.
From there, the Hearts were asked to defend for long stretches as Knoxville pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer.
Portland’s defense continued to hold firm, closing down space in and around the box while Morse handled the chances that got through. He finished the night with seven saves, repeatedly keeping Knoxville off the board as the match moved into its closing stages.
Portland made a pair of changes in the 75th minute, bringing on Mohamed Mohamed and Felipe Rodriguez Gentile for Konstantinos Georgallides and Walter Varela as the Hearts looked to see out the result.
Knoxville broke through in the 86th minute. Teddy Baker created the opportunity for Babacar Diene, who converted to level the match at 1-1 and deny the Hearts a road victory after nearly 90 minutes of resistance.
Six minutes of stoppage time followed, but neither side was able to find a winner, leaving Portland with a hard-earned point from the opening match of a two-game road swing.
The final numbers reflected the amount of defending Portland was called upon to do. Knoxville finished with a 26-9 advantage in shots and 70 percent of the possession, while Morse made seven saves and Garibay was called upon to make just one at the other end.
The draw moves Portland to 5-9-7 in USL League One play.
The Hearts remain on the road Saturday, August 22, when they travel to Virginia to face the Richmond Kickers at City Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
