Mikey joins Portland Hearts of Pine from Birmingham Legion FC, where he served as the club’s first captain and second-ever signing. During his time there, he was named Defender of the Year in 2019, consistently ranked among the top five in defensive duels and tackles, and became one of the first players to reach 100 appearances. He also played a crucial role in leading the team to the 2023 U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals.
Mikey won a national championship in his freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011 and entered the 2013 Major League Soccer (MLS) draft as a Generation Adidas player. He was drafted in the first round by Sporting Kansas City, and spent three seasons with the club, followed by two years with New York City FC. After his MLS career, he joined San Antonio FC in the USL Championship before signing with Birmingham Legion FC in 2019.
Equally weighed is his passion for building a strong team culture and creating history with a new project, drawing on his experience in helping establish Birmingham Legion FC. Known for his “never say die” attitude, Mikey is a tenacious competitor who prides himself on doing the hard work that often goes unnoticed, from making crucial tackles to blocking game-winning shots. Fans can expect a relentless warrior who will fight for the badge, the city, and their support for all 90 minutes, leaving everything on the field while also seeking opportunities to contribute offensively.
As he transitions to Portland, Maine, Mikey and his family are eager to immerse themselves in the community and embrace life in the Northeast. He is ready to help Hearts of Pine grow and make a lasting impression both on and off the field.
“I’m excited to be back in the northeast and experience a new city. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Portland, so we are looking forward to getting there and being immersed in the community.”
